Andover/North Andover YMCA

Andover/North Andover YMCA

Andover, MA

The Andover/North Andover YMCA facility had remained relatively unchanged since it was built in 1973. To accommodate nearly 25,000 visits each month, the YMCA hired Harvey to complete an expansion project that would better meet the needs of the community. The project featured renovations to the existing facility, as well as an addition of 50,000 square feet.

The project began with a new, 7,700 square foot childcare center for preschool and school-aged children on the first floor of the building. Previously spread out in various locations, having one dedicated space for the childcare center will make it easier on parents to pick up their children at the end of the day. Also on the first floor is a new Active Learning Center where third and fourth grade children can participate in a curriculum created by Merrimack College professors to improve their STEM test scores. Next to the learning center, a new teaching kitchen was built to accommodate cooking classes for both children and adults. The main entrance to the facility was moved into the newly constructed space, along with a wrap-around, two story glass wing which is home to the new Wellness Center.

The new Wellness Center features brand new equipment including workout bikes and weight lifting equipment, locker rooms, and a much needed family locker room. With plenty of natural light flooding through the glass windows, the atmosphere of the Wellness Center completely changed. Additionally, four new fitness studios for Zumba and spin classes, and a multi-purpose family swimming and lap pool were constructed. Along with the expanded Wellness Center, a learning center for STEM education and a 5,000 square foot rehabilitation center operated by trainers and practitioners from Lawrence General Hospital were added. This will allow members to see their doctors and receive treatment for injuries on site.

Now over 104,000 square feet, the Andover/North Andover YMCA can provide more opportunities for physical activity and nutritional education, as well as provide the tools to strengthen the community as a whole.
