Harvey Preps Garrison Elementary School Kids for Major Renovation

Dover and Bedford, NH – Bearing gifts, representatives from Harvey Construction Corporation recently visited the Garrison Elementary School to talk with students about upcoming renovations that will start in January. At an assembly in the school’s cafeteria, Carl Dubois, VP and manager of preconstruction, Mike Halliday, project superintendent, and Adam Reynolds, project manager, all from Harvey Construction, passed out hard hats and talked what the impact of the renovation would be on the students. The assembly gathered Garrison Elementary School’s nearly 500 kindergarten through fourth grade students.

As the upcoming renovation will occur while school is in session, the team at Harvey Construction wanted to ensure the students felt that they were a part of the project. Students wore the hard hats during the event and were excited about the renovation, with some sharing stories about their parents working on bathroom and other home renovation projects, while others expressed excitement about seeing the construction workers and equipment.

“Our students are eagerly awaiting the renovation,” said Beth Dunton, principal of Garrison Elementary School. “The toy hard hats won them over, and they are looking forward to getting involved in the project. The team at Harvey Construction has been very thorough in educating the students about what various signs mean and why it is so important for them to be extra careful, all while communicating that the students will be able to participate in certain projects. Their efforts to involve the students make this the students’ project as much as it is Harvey’s.”

The renovation process will occur over an eighteen-month period and will be broken up into three, six-month phases with an anticipated completion date in June 2019. The renovation will cover most of the building. Some of the features of the renovation include entirely new finishes and mechanical upgrades such as a new boiler, duct work, air distribution system, fire alarm system and sprinkler system, as well as a full life safety system. The building will also be brought up to current code. The three phases of the project represent work for the three wings of the building. During each phase, students impacted by the project will be moved into the gymnasium where temporary classrooms will be set up.

“We are eager to start the renovations at Garrison Elementary School,” said Carl DuBois, VP and manager of preconstruction for the project. “This is a full gut of the school’s interior classroom wings, and we’ll be approaching it in ways that enable students to put their stamp on the building. We want the kids to feel like they’re involved in the re-creation of their school, and our plan is to include them in fun ways throughout the process.”
