Keene State College hired Harvey in 2001 as Construction Manager for the expansion of the existing Spaulding Gymnasium, originally constructed in 1968. Their goal: to entice students to come to Keene State College, and to enhance the social and recreational environment on campus.
The new facility consists of a new 3-level, 46,000 square foot addition and 70,000 square foot renovation. The new addition houses a suspended track over a three-court gymnasium, a free-weight training room surrounded by glass, two aerobics rooms, offices, laundry and storage, and a monumental staircase featuring glass rails and finishes.
As an active participant in the pre-construction phase, Harvey estimated several building system alternatives to guide the design process and help the College arrive at an achievable project within the available resources. Additionally, Harvey’s team made valuable suggestions during the project to minimize disruption of services and improve quality of systems and final finishes.
